Fishing Reports

November 16, 2001:
Little Striper / 4:30 am / Marina Del Rey
Josh, Steve Dunlap & Ken Gorseline the Little Striper out of Marina Del Rey loaded with squid & sardines. We ran to Palos Verdes to try for the morning bite on the seabass along with a few other boats without success. We metered tons of squid and picked a few calico's, sm. Lings & sculpin. Then ran up to Malibu to drift for halibut. Working up & down the beach by the chart house from 40 to 90 ft along w/many other boats. Overall slow, lots of shorts only 1 sandbass, a shovelnose & a 24" keeper. Steve had a good hook up but it spit up a sanddab that had swallowed his hook. I lost a keeper under the boat as it spit up the sardine with the hook spun around & buried in the bait. Stopped & fished the Topanga area for a 29" keeper on the way back. Back @ ramp 4:30 pm.

November 9, 2001:
Striper / 4:30 am / Morro Bay
Mike & Josh Dunlap took their boat Striper out of Morro Bay on Friday along with Ed Zubiate & Steve Behrens from Blue Fever Designs. We ran 45 mi. on a 210 before we started to see a few birds & some bait. We put our jigs in & kept on our heading. At 52 & 32 we saw some birds working so we ran over threw bait & they came up boiling. They were a little line shy eating the 20 lb best. We picked 7 albies between 25 & 30 lbs on that stop. After a lull we got our only troll fish on a zucchini. Our last 2 fish came off a couple of jumpers Ed spotted so we soaked bait & picked our 2 largest fish at 34 lbs. Back @ ramp 3:30 pm. Click here for pictures.

November 3, 2001:
Mrs. G / 5:00 am / Marina Del Rey
Dan Gilman and Josh were moving Mrs. G from her slip in MDR to her new spot in San Diego. We got a nice mix of Squid, Sardines & sm. Chovies. After watching the deck hand catch a few sm. WSB at the receiver we headed to Catalina to start. Looked around the east end & settled by Church Rock for nothing. It was right on the tide change & there was a nice strong line along the beach just to the N. so we backed in & threw some squid @ the beach. About 1/2 way back to the boat in the middle of the water column, my line pulled very tight, very fast. As soon as I set the hook my 20lb line started ripping straight towards the beach. It kept going until my Calcutta 400te was just about spooled. We thought it was going to crawl out of the water onto the beach (It took 150 yds of line & we were only 100 yds off the beach) before it broke off. We gave it our best effort for another 1.5 hrs with nothing to show for it. We started south checking out the high spots on the way down. Not far off the 277 we saw a paddy with some bait & a huge swirl in the water as we approached. We started fishing the area & everything we dragged got attacked by sm. Makos. We played with those for a while catching 4 or 5 before picking up & hauling the rest of the way down the coast. Arrived @ new slip 4:30 pm.

October 27, 2001:
Little Striper / 5:00 am / Morro Bay
Ken Gorseline and Josh & Steve Dunlap took the Little Striper up to Morro Bay on Sat. It was greasy flat for our 40 mile run on a 210 deg. heading to the 59 deg water. We had the jigs in for about a minute & a half before the double zuchini was short bit. We stopped, chummed & they came boiling. We didn't move the boat until we had to drain out the blood. I've never seen such a huge spread of albacore, everybody for miles was stopped & hooked up. They kept boiling on the water that was draining out of the bait tank right off the swim step. We had 3 in the 50 lb class & were keeping nothing under 40. Ended up keeping 18 & releasing 30+ fish. Lost one in the high 60's when my Dad gaffed my line.

October 21, 2001:
Striper / 5:30 am / Hotel Coral, Ensenada
Sunday we went for a short day of bass fishing around Punta Banda. Fishing was very slow w/only 3 bass caught but 2 were 4 lbs. A few sm. lings & olive rockfish later we decided to head in. In the middle of Ensenada bay we spotted boils & birds crashing so we stopped & caught & released a bunch of bonito on the bass gear. They hit trolled swimbaits & rapala’s or by throwing iron.

October 20, 2001:
Striper / 5:30 am / Hotel Coral, Ensenada
With very calm conditions on saturday the same crew headed on a 230 deg. heading for 39 miles until the 64 Deg. water jumped to 66.6. We put the jigs in & worked the edge picking a fish here & there but getting 1 bait fish on each stop. We had 8 or 9 15-20lb class albies for the morning but experienced a mid-day lull with the exception of a blind jig strike by a 12 lb dorado followed by another one that ate both a sardine thrown by Pete & a swimbait thrown by Josh. Early afternoon we got a triple that went WFO for about 1.5 hrs till we were out of bait. All the fish were 15-20 lbs with 2 about 30 lbs.  Click here for pictures.

October 19, 2001:
Striper / 4:30 am / Hotel Coral, Ensenada
Josh, Mike, Steve & Pete headed out but we heard of the bumpy conditions outside & decided to head up the baja coast for some bass fishing. We dropped Mike back @ the hotel & headed for salsapuentes. We fished the kelp at the N end of the bay for 40+ bass up to 7 lbs. All were caught on a variety of swimbaits & released. Lingcod, sandbass & rockfish also made it into the mix. We tried around miguel for a few. Arrived @ Hotel 1:30 pm.  Click here for pictures.

September 29, 2001:
Striper / 5:30 am / Hotel Coral, Ensenada
Josh, Mike, & Steve went to redeem ourselves offshore. We ran 20 mi. to the outside of the banda bank untill the water turned 64 deg. We were stopped shortly on a sm. purple/bk feather by a 20lb class albie. Shortly after a double on the same feathers & Dad got a baitfish. I put on a sm purple feather & was shortbit then taken a min. later. That turned into a full speed bite that lasted about 1.5 hrs. We started up again & the same feather went off for another long stop where we started releasing albies. We put out the Marlin gear for the ride home till we saw one of the largest paddies ever. It was loaded with playful yellows, so we pulled on a few as we dumped our remaining bait. Albies & yellows came full speed. We passed off the paddie to Charo & Wide Open . About a 40 fish day. Arrived @ Hotel 3:15 pm.  Click here for pictures.

September 28, 2001:
Striper / Western Outdoor News San Diego Challenge / 3:45 am / San Diego
Josh, Mike & Dad made the mistake of fishing the bass division because of our previous weeks success on many calico's in the 6 to 8.5 lb range. The water temp had dropped to 61 and was very murky @ our spot down the baja coast. We had to work very hard for about 25 bass, but not the pigs. We had 2 over 5 lbs and 2 more in the 3lb class. It took 28 lbs to win & 24 for 2nd Big fish was 8.5. Yellowtail were 30 & 40 lbs with a big fish of 23. Halibut were 14 & 15, with a big fish of 14. Tuna were 40 & 50 with a big fish of 25. We should have stuck with what we know best & fished the tuna.

September 22, 2001:
Striper / 5:30 am / Hotel Coral, Ensenada
Josh, Dad & Ken headed up to our calico spot loaded up w/horse dines. We pulled up to wide open fishing on calico's from 4 to 8.5 lbs. Great fishing for me & Ken, Dad couldn't get bit for some reason. More quality bass than I have ever seen in 1 day. Probably 7 fish over 7 lbs. Another 10 between 5 & 7 lbs. Did best along thick kelp edges. Arrived @ Hotel 2:30 pm. Click here for pictures.

September 21, 2001:
Striper / 4:00 am / Hotel Coral, Ensenada
Josh, Mike, Dad & Ken headed to a spot 60+ mi. 180 S where the temp. break was. It was quite rough & we were burning to much gas to get down there & back. We decided to head west to a smaller break. We found it at 43 mi. from the hotel. The water went from 62.5 to 64.5. We started hooking albacore & lots of skipjack. All fish were hooked while trolling downswell, mostly on the cedar plugs. Only 2 baitfish. 7 albies 15 to 20 lbs. All the paddies we crossed were dry. Water was 58 for 40 miles. Arrived @ Hotel 3:00 pm.

September 16, 2001:
Float Tube / 6:00 am / Alameda Bay
Me & Pete did a float tube tournament with about 15 other guys from floattuber.com. We kicked along the right side of the channel to where the Diversion is docked. Catching 1 19" halibut on a curly tailed grub along the wall. I then got just legal sand bass right under the Diversion. As the tide changed we worked our way back. I got a yellowfin croaker on my way across the channel to the 76 dock. I got another 12" sand bass & a short bay bass on the wall inside of gas dock. Pete got a croaker, short seabass & sm. bass. I had the only legal bass barely. Croakers won.

September 15, 2001:
Mrs. G / 5:00 am / Marina Del Rey
Dan, Josh & Pete got a scoop of lg. dines & headed toward Santa Barbara Island w/ a broken fish finder. It was the first time going there for all of us. A little over 2 hours & 48 mi. later. We looked for warm water or life on the way across finding dry paddies cold water & lots of seals. We headed beyond to the Osborne Bank looking for tuna. We found lots of bait birds & porpoise, but no tuna. After a couple of hours we gave up on that and headed for the Island to look for yellows & calicos. The water was very clear & we couldn't get a bite to save our lives. We fished all around the little island to the west & the west & east end of the main island. We found a spot on the inside of the small island w/lots of whitefish & a quality sheepshead. Arrived @ slip 5:30 pm.

September 2, 2001:
Striper / 3:30 am / Hotel Coral, Ensenada
Josh, Mike, Willie, Homero & Renee headed out off the N. End of the island at around 4 or 5 mi. started looking for the birds & boilers which never seem to develop. We got a jigfish on a mexican flag & Mike got a baitfish. We trolled for a while for nothing before we got called in on a tiny kelp stringer that went wide for us. I got a 20 + yellow on a swimbait & everyone else got yellowfin. We put out the #'s & there ended up being a steady bite for about 20 boats. We picked 11 yellowfin & the tail & lost as many. Heavy casualties. Strong fish. Arrived @ Hotel 2:00 pm.  Click here for pictures.

September 1, 2001:
Striper / 3:30 am / Hotel Coral, Ensenada
Josh, Mike, Willie, Homero & Renee all down for Willies bachelor party headed out to about 20 mi & started fishing @ crack of dawn. We got a troll yellowfin on disco wood. We fished around for nothing before we came across a huge area of porpoise. I slid a bait back and a swimbait. They both hooked up quickly & soon everybody was in. We all got a yellowfin off that stop except Renee who farmed two hooksets and a fish at gaff. We headed back in to about 4 mi off the north end of the island. There were some serious feeding & boils going on but the fish were moving fast & lots of boats were there. I got 1 baitfish off one of the boils. Lots of Blue Whales around and Yellowfin near them. Arrived at Hotel 3:00 pm.

August 25, 2001
Striper / 4:00 am / Hotel Coral, Ensenada
Josh, Mike & Steve headed out with a ton of tiny chovies. Our first jig strike of the morn. was on disco wood that turned out to be a lg. dorado that may have went 40 lbs & Dad lost it right at the boat. We trolled on & hooked another one which Dad panicked & knocked the reel out of gear & lost. We ended up getting 2 yellowfin & a couple of dorado. OK day but no baitfish, a little rough & Mike was sick & slept all day. Tough fishing 2 people. Arrived @ Hotel 5:30 pm.

August 15, 2001
Working on Diversion / 5:30 am / Long Beach
Captain Ron, Josh & 6 clients headed to San Clemente Isl. to get on a epic yellowtail bite. The guys were late so we missed the morn. bite & were called out of the cove by the coast guard @ 9:30 am. We went around the inside to fish off the domes. We had a few pickups but not good fisherman. We hooked & landed 1 25 lb yellow & watched a few others caught. We went back around to the area between pyramid head & china point but the fish didn’t come back up. Back @ slip 5:00 pm.

August 11, 2001:
Striper / 8:00 am / Hotel Coral, Ensenada
We didn’t bother with a wakeup call since the bite was so late the previous day. Got up late & headed back to our #’s & started trolling about 1 mi shy of them. We hooked up about .5 mi. from our #’s on a mexican flag. We were stopped 2 more times quickly with the fish charging the sm. amount of chum we had. We got 5 or 6 albies before dorado came in and we got 4 of those. As we were about to start up some lg albies came in & we each got 1 of those. We had a sm. mako about 10 lbs hanging around the boat. Arrived @ hotel 3:30 pm.

July 14, 2001:
Panga / Las Arenas, BC
Josh & Mike headed up to the same tuna area as the first day with the same boat situation. I hooked up shortly on a lg. tuna that took about 1.5 hrs & turned out to be 68 lbs. My personal best yellowfin. The bite was done so we headed towards the beach & fished around the point for a 25 lb tuna for Mike. We fished around S. catching some sm. roosters & trumpet fish. Fishing our way back Mike hooked and landed a 35 lb Jack on 15lb tackle.  Click here for pictures.

July 13, 2001:
Panga / La Paz, BC
Jonathan Roldan, again going beyond the call of duty was kind enough to join Josh & Jeremy for a day in the gap for some great dorado fishing. We did very well on 10 to 35 lb dorado on sargasso grass. We ended up with 18. Jonathan did an outstanding job of keeping fresh rods & hooks handy when the bite was WFO. Mike & Kenny got a few dorado tuna. I'm not sure what Steve & Ken did.  Click here for pictures.

July 12, 2001:
Panga / Las Arenas, BC
The first day of our trip booked through Jonathan Roldan of course. He makes everything so simple so you don't have to worry about the details. We all know how important that is in Baja where anything can happen. We started with Josh & Mike on 1 boat, Ken & Kenny on another & Steve & Jeremy on another. We started fishing tuna first fishing the middle inside of Cervallo Island. I landed 1 & Mike got 2 30 to 40 lb tuna in the first 1/2 day. Once the tuna bite slowed we headed into the beach for roosters. With all the sardines along the beach they were there in force. All you had to do was throw a handful of bait & they would come from nowhere and attack. The big ones haven't shown up yet but ther were plenty of small roosters. We caught and released around 40 between 5 & 15 lbs on 15 lb bass gear. Everybody else stayed out on the tuna grounds all day & Kenny got 1 tuna & Ken got 5. Dad got 1or 2 & 0 for Jeremy. All tuna were very scrappy yellowfin between 30 & 40 lbs.  Click here for pictures.

June 23, 2001:
Striper / WON Saltwater Rodeo / 5:00 am / Hotel Coral, Ensenada
Josh, Mike & Steve headed straight to the #'s of the yellows the previous day. We found a paddy about a mi. from our #'s & went WFO on the 8-14 lb fish. We fished them for about 2.5 hrs. & landed about 45 fish releasing the smallest 35 or so. We then headed S. towards Eric that had a triple stop for 22 lb albies. We worked his area for nothing & ran back to banda trolled some mackies for a last chance for a kicker fish but no luck. I think we came in fourth in the yellowtail division. Eric got second in tuna w/Capt. Ron getting 3rd. Arrived @ Hotel 4:00 pm.

June 22, 2001:
Striper / 5:30 am / Hotel Coral, Ensenada
Josh, Mike & Steve headed south on a 205 deg. heading to the area that has been working so far this year. We got bit pretty well by the albacore & they came on bait well but we didn't get any big ones. We kept working our way N. looking for bigger fish. I spotted a 1/2 mile area of surface disturbance ahead of us. We chased the fast moving school until a jig went off well short of the meat of the fish. They turned out to be breezing yellowtail. We fished them for about 1.5 hrs. catching & releasing about 25 fish. I've never seen an area of fish that size. We thought it must be dolphin at first because it was such a huge area. Arrived @ Hotel 3:30 pm.

June 10, 2001:
Striper / 5:30 am / Hotel Coral, Ensenada
Josh, Mike & Steve decided to check out the local action so we headed out towards the high spot slow trolling sardines through the birds for a bunch or baracuda. That got old quick so we went to Point Miguel & found good marks in 18ft. It went wide on Lg. Calicos & a couple of short seabass. I lost a lg seabass on a mackerel on 30lb line. Mike pulled the hook on a trophy calico right at the boat, also hooked on a mackerel. Arrived @ Hotel 11:30 am.

June 9, 2001:
Striper / 4:30 am / Hotel Coral, Ensenada

We had many troll stops most bringing a couple of baitfish that were mostly 10 to 20 lbs. Very good early season bite. We ended with around 22 albies w/sm ones released. We also found a paddy w/yellowtail & albacore. Caught fish on the way back to 30 mi. 64 deg water best. Arrived @ Hotel 4:30 pm.

June 6, 2001:
Coastal / 4:30 am / Marina Del Rey
Josh & Eric went on his boat "Coastal" after the seabass again. They came through at 5:30 on the tide change & I hooked a 20 pounder on double pinned white Iron Man SB in the rack. Eric hooked & lost 4 fish in the time it took me to land my fish. We caught a bunch of baracuda & sand bass before leaving the 90 ft water & fleet of 30 boats. We headed out to 110 ft on some marks where Eric hooked & landed a 30 pounder. We dicked around & cleaned the fish for nothing else. Mike, Dad, & Eric went back the next morn. for baracuda & lg sand bass.  Click here for pictures.

May 31, 2001:
Mrs. G / 4:00 am / Marina Del Rey

We anchored amongst 100 boats in a small area in about 90 ft of water less than a mile off the breakwall. We had a few mystery fish & Dan got spooled on 15 lb. Lots of barracuda & rays, but we saw fish caught around us. Back @ slip 9:00 am.

May 26, 2001:

May 25, 2001:
Mrs. G / 4:00 am / Marina Del Rey
Dan & Josh headed around the west end @ grey light & had to go to Ben Weston for squid. We were back in my hole on the right side of West Cove by 6:30 AM, anchored up in 12 ft of water. We got a bucket full of fresh dead from the light boat & our constant chum got the bass & barracuda going right away. I shortly got a 30" seabass. We had a constant calico bite all day in the constant chum. I caught another just legal seabass & got humbled hard by a lg. one. Dan missed quite a few also. I finished up a great day with a 13lb halibut. Never moved! Back @ slip 5:00 pm.

May 20, 2001:
Float Tube / 4:30 am / Santa Barbara Harbor
Me & Pete float tubed the harbor, after being shortbit on the swimbait I started throwing a sm. krocodile on my 6lb spinning rod. I caught a 20" seabass right away followed by a bunch of croaker. It was slow for a while except for Rich Dussaigne who caught 2 nice legal halibut using anchovies. We started using them & I caught a dogfish right away, then a 20" salmon. I put on the fastrac & caught 2 sm. halibut. Pete got 2 sm. halibut. Done 10:00 am.

May 18, 2001:
Capt. Ron's private boat / 4:30 am / Long Beach
Ron, Josh & his friend Cris headed for the west end on his 26' center counsel boat. We drifted the outside edge on the left of west cove before we anchored off of a table like rock on the right side of the back of west cove. We started getting bit on the tide change right up against the shore. Many missed bites, pulled hooks & broken line. bit for about an hr. limited + 12 to 24 lb seabass. Bass bit well along rocks to south. Followed some birds to a ridge outside cat harbor toward farnsworth 80 to 100ft. Lots of short to just legal halibut w/a 12lb. & a 7lb sandbass. Headed to Farnsworth for a ling & back to the west cove for the afternoon w/limited bait & no luck. Back @ launch ramp 4:00 pm.

May 17, 2001:

May 11 & 12, 2001:
Striper / Hotel Coral, Ensenada
Mike D., Mike R. & 2 of his friends headed offshore looking for paddies with a decent score on 14 to 18 lb yellows & few spanish mackerel. While catching sandbass & chumming the gas dock caught a 30" halibut & a 12 lb striped bass.  Click here for pictures.

May 4, 2001:
Striper / Marina Del Rey Breakwall
Josh, Mike & Mike R. did an early run for bass on the break wall & got about 13 calico's to 14" & a couple of sm. sandies & a lg. perch. Not a bad morn. Had to bring the boat to the marina to get a new Auto Pilot Installed.

April 24-25, 2001:
Striper / 9:00 pm / Long Beach
Josh, Mike & Mike R. followed Steve & Ken in the Little Striper ran across to the 3 V's. Up around Ben Weston we found a sm. light boat w/more squid floating than I have ever seen. We bounced around all night for a variety of sharks. The seabass had shut off. We anchored off a rock s. of Salte Verde for some decent bass action. Worked from Ben Weston s. for bass & marks for nothing but bat rays. Back @ ramp 3:00 pm.

April 1, 2001:
Striper / Hotel Coral, Ensenada
Josh, Mike & Steve went back for more of the same swimbait action as the day before. Not quite as much action but pretty good. One nice bass on some lg structure closer to the island. We came back in to University point for another ling & a nice sandie. Fished the break wall for some decent bass action. I got a very solid 5 lb to the boat were it flipped off. Tons of bait everywhere! Back @ Hotel 12:00.

March 31, 2001:
Striper / Hotel Coral, Ensenada
Josh, Mike & Steve headed toward the high spot looking for tails. We saw bait & birds then some puddlers. We didn't get there in time & that's all we saw of yellows. With only frozen squid we all started out with swimbaits or iron. I was catching lots of sm. lingcod on a swimbait & Mike got a couple on squid heads. We caught a variety of barracuda, bass, whitefish & rockfish. I had one very solid hookup that was taken by a large seal, believed to be a lg. seabass. Lots of sm. fish wide open on swimbaits. We headed to Punta Banda but pretty slow. Mike pulled a couple of nice bass. Back @ Hotel 3:00 pm.

March 16, 2001:
Capt. Travis Flats Boat / 6:00 am / Mosquito Lagoon, Florida
Josh, Julie & our guide Travis left from a different area today because of the high winds. We went to fish some private docks for snook even though it was to early in the season. It was very neat but not productive, a few sm. seatrout but our plastic shrimp lures were constantly violated by pufferfish. We fished a deep channel by a powerplant w/live shrimp & watched the manatees for a while. We headed to the outlet of warm water from the powerplant & started catching fish. Jacks, mangrove snapper, a nice 7 lb red & Me & Travis were each broken off by lg. snook. We only had a 1/2 day & had to check out so we were cut short once we found the fish. Back @ ramp 11:30 am.  Click here for pictures.

March 15, 2001:
Capt. Travis Flats Boat / 6:00 am / Mosquito Lagoon, Florida
Josh, Julie & our guide Travis. We started fishing some flats in 1 to 3 ft. of water. We each caught some sm. redfish, using 1/4 lead heads, simple rubber shrimp fished very fast on 4 lb fireline with a 20 lb flourocarbon leader. Travis got snapped off by a big red. The wind picked up making it tough. We fished some sheltered area for small sea trout, pinfish & Julie got a sm. Jack. We netted some sm. mullet then went back to the top of the flat & anchored. I flylined a mullet & Julie fished a live shrimp under a float. Travis chummed some canned mackerel, & I was shortly picked up by a 7 lb Redfish. Julie caught a 3 lb saltwater cat. We went to fish a cove for lg seatrout with the live bait. I got a surface hit that ended up being another catfish. Back @ ramp 3:30 pm.
