| How To Trap Rig a
Big Hammer Swimbait by Steve Greanias |
|
This method builds on Larry Heron's rigging method. With this method you can measure out the length of the leader ahead of time and it solves the problem of having to tie the leader line to the main hook after the leader is rigged through the bait. Components needed are:
1) braided line (Spectra, Power-Pro, etc.). It has been testing with up to 50 lb. test but 8 - 12 seems to be ideal.
2) Size 6 or 8 Octopus or Mosquito hook.
Start by tying your leader line to the trap hook and a loop on the opposite end. The length of this rig should be approximately 2 1/4 to 2 3/8 inches from the bend of the trap hook to the tip of the loop. You may need to experiment with lengths to see what works best for you.

Now tie a similar rig to your threading needle.

Connect the threading needle line to your leader like this...

Thread the needle through the swimbait starting at the tail. Be careful not to get to close to the sides of the swimbait with the needle. Once you have the needle through pull the line so the loop on your trap hook leader is near your main hook.

Now attach the loop to the shank of your main hook by wrapping the loop around itself putting the "new" loop around the shank of the main hook - much like attaching a hook to a dropper loop rig.

Pull the bait out straight, adjust the trap hook and you're ready to fish.

And for halibut drifting...

An alternate method is to
just put the loop itself over the shank of the main hook. There is one
problem with this as there is a slight possibility that the trap hook can tear
out of the swimbait on a large fish. If that happens there would be
nothing holding the trap leader onto the main hook. This problem can be
solved by tying a small piece of light monofilament through the trap leader loop
and around the shank of the hook.
